I love the small town of Red Lodge. The small shops and good restaurants are a great alternative to the “Big City” life that a lot of us moved here to get away from. The town in conducive to great friends and good times, not to mention the great skiing of Red Lodge Mountain. The idea of a planning board maintaining the development of Red Lodge is refreshing. Not having any “Big Business” or franchises move in other than Subway, shows the concerns for the small business owners and wanting to keep Main Street thriving. But WHY is there a growing number of UGLY BILLBOARDS going up in the area? The most offensive eyesore is heading up Beartooth Pass for a beautiful encounter with nature and seeing some giant-sized ugly hairless dog greeting you on an UGLY BILLBOARD. Quite honestly, I don’t want to look at advertising when I can see the Beartooths. Is outdoor advertising not a concern of the city planning and controlled environment? I believe that the motivation is money and not the sole destruction of the visual beauty of Red Lodge but it is time to preserve the community appearance unless we want Red Lodge to be a suburb of Billings. If you go to places like Bend, Oregon, where there is motivation to maintain the natural environment you don’t see commercial advertising on that level of obtrusiveness. When I lived in Colorado years ago, there was a ban on billboards to preserve the natural settings but unfortunately, the greed took over the morals of the officials and just look at I-70. Why is the greed overtaking nature? Please take down the outdoor advertising or at least stop installing more and restore the “small town” feel to a great mountain resort. If that isn’t possible….please allow some commercial retail like “Dollar General” or “Family Dollar” into the town that would benefit the “Local” townspeople. Please, No more BIG UGLY BILLBOARDS!
